Winter is here and many of us are knitting hats, cowls, and scarves. So let’s talk about cowl patterns. They’re quick and easy knits that use one or two skeins of yarn. My collection of cowl patterns is quite varied. From long and lacy to small and warm, there is something for everyone. Today let’s take a look at one skein worsted weight cowl patterns.
What Is A Cowl?
A cowl is a type of garment, typically worn around the neck, that is similar to a scarf but with a wider, circular or draped design. A cowl is worn as a loop that you pull over your head. It stays in place without tying or wrapping. It’s often knitted and it serves as both a functional and fashionable accessory to keep you warm during colder months.
Cowls are popular for their versatility and are styled in many ways. For example, you can wear a cowl simply around the neck for a cozy look, layered over or under coats, or even paired with sweaters for a chic vibe.
One Skein Cowl Patterns
I love a one skein cowl pattern and worsted weight yarn creates the perfect sized one skein cowl. I tend to collect single skeins of pretty hand-dyed worsted weight yarn. So I have designed a good handful of one skein worsted weight cowls.
My first cowl pattern ever was the Coco Cowl and it remains a favourite of mine and a best-selling pattern. It began my love of Malabrigo Rios, a beautiful and luxurious worsted weight yarn. I’ve used it a lot in designing as well as personal knitting. It’s my favourite worsted yarn.
The Foggy Day Cowl, Lattice and Purl Cowl, Winter Berries, and Cinnamon Sticks are all similar one skein cowls designed in either Malabrigo Rios or Malabrigo Merino Worsted.
Another great feature of each of these one skein projects is that you get to learn a new stitch on a small and easy project. Whether it’s a new cable stitch, eyelets, or bobbles (as in the Winter Berries pattern) it’s always fun to learn something new.
Of course, I have ventured into other yarns for cowl designs, but I usually stick with worsted weight yarn for a one skein cowl just to get that perfect size and fit. I designed the Diamond Purl Cowl and the Honeycomb Eyelet Cowl as sister patterns in a now discontinued yarn. I then re-knitted both in Lichen and Lace Superwash Merino Worsted and they turned out beautifully.
Another best-selling cowl pattern is the Contentment Cowl. It was designed as part of the Winter Comfort Collection.
Free One Skein Cowl Patterns
And of course, because I love a one skein cowl pattern so much, I had to give you at least one free pattern!
The Sugar Plum Cowl is one of my most popular free knitting patterns. It’s a simple pattern that can be adapted to be bigger, smaller, striped, multi-coloured, whatever you wish. Check out the many variations that knitters have posted on Ravelry.
I hope I’ve inspired you to knit your own one skein cowl. It’s a quick and easy project with wonderful results. Plus, a worsted weight cowl is a cozy accessory to keep you warm this winter!
Happy cowl knitting everyone!
