There’s nothing better than a great big squishy garter stitch shawl to wrap yourself up in on a cool day. This triangular shawl starts with just a few stitches and is worked sideways with a centred double decrease stitch creating a sideways ‘spine’ effect. The colour changes keep it interesting and the garter stitch knitting is simple and soothing. Choose any three colours of sock or fingering weight yarn to make it your own.

Yarn:
Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply (100% superwash merino wool; 400 yd [365 m]/4 oz [115 g]). 1 skein C1; 1 skein, or approx 250 yds, of C2; 1 skein C3. Shown in Dark Aquarius (C1), Coventry (C2), and Fiddlehead (C3).

Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles (100% merino wool; 400 yd [366 m]/3.53 oz [100 g]). Two full skeins of C1 and C3 are required and approx 250 yards of C2. Shown in Urchin (C1), Graphite (C2), and Construct (C3).

Needles:
US size 6 [4.0 mm] 24” [60 cm] circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
*The shawl is worked flat but circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts.

Finished measurements: Approximately 36 inches (91.5 cm) deep at middle point and 97 inches (246 cm) long across top edge, blocked.

Skills required: Increasing, decreasing, changing colours for stripes, blocking. Stitches used: k, p, kfb, S2KP2 (centred double decrease).
