This lovely hand dyed yarn beautifully captures the colours of the northern lights dancing against a dark sky. With a simple combination of garter stitch and yarn overs these pretty colours get to dance across the dark background of this easy crescent-shaped shawl. It is worked from the top down with only knit stitches, yarn overs, and increase stitches, making it a quick and easy project.

This pattern was originally designed in collaboration with Hilori’s Magical Yarnorium as part of the Cross Country Canada Road Trip KAL. The pattern, and the colourway Dancing Skies, represent Canada’s Northwest Territories. See also: Lichen, Berries and Moss.

Yarn: Approximately 420 yds [384 m] of fingering-weight variegated yarn, especially variegated yarn with dramatic sections of colour.
Original yarn (now discontinued): Hilori’s Magical Yarnorium Meri Jane. 1 skein. Shown in The Sky’s Awake. (Important note for this yarn: I used all 407 yards of yarn and I’m a tight knitter. Be sure to have enough yarn on hand.)

Needles: US size 6 [4.0 mm] 24” [60 cm] circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge.
*Shawl is worked flat but circular needle will accommodate large number of sts.

Finished measurements: Approximately 20 inches (51 cm) deep at middle point and 70 inches (178 cm) long across the top edge, blocked.

Skills required: Increasing, working and then dropping multiple yarn overs, blocking. Stitches used: k, kfb, M1L, M1R, yo.

Pattern includes list of abbreviations, diagram, and written instructions.
