There’s something magical about summer. Maybe it’s the long sun-drenched days, the salty breeze by the ocean, or the freedom to wear light flowy layers and summer shawls.

If you’re looking for another quick and easy summer shawl knitting pattern this month to keep that feeling going then why not take on one of my easy end-to-end shawl patterns?

What Is A Summer Shawl Exactly?

My definition of a summer shawl is one that is small, light, and airy. Garter stitch and lace knitted in fingering weight yarn on a larger needle and blocked hard is my go-to summer shawl project. If it can be done in only one skein of yarn and from end to end then that’s an even better summer knitting project. I have a large collection of just this type of pattern in my pattern store so let’s take a look at some examples.

Salt Water and Sea Stars

Salt Water and Sea Stars

The beautiful blue of the ocean and the sand, seashells, sand dollars, and sea stars are the inspiration for Salt Water and Sea Stars. The crossed cable motif creates the lacy border and gives the illusion of sea stars. The wide lace border makes this one a deep end to end shawl.

I chose a pretty ocean coloured yarn with sandy flecks which is unfortunately no longer available. However, any pretty fingering weight yarn can be used. One skein is all that’s needed.

Style tip: Pair it with a flowing maxi dress or crisp linen for that coastal look.

Tumbling Waves

Featuring undulating lace and gentle repeats, Tumbling Waves is another ode to the ocean. This design creates movement through the yarn, echoing the playful dance of water over sand. Lightweight yet eye-catching, it’s ideal for layering on cool summer evenings. It is also a deep end-to-end shawl.

It is shown here in one skein of Lichen and Lace 1ply Superwash Merino Fingering in Beach Glass.

Yarn suggestion: Go for hand-dyed tones of blue and teal to mimic sea spray.

Beautiful Blossoms

Perfect for flower lovers, Beautiful Blossoms combines floral lace motifs with a graceful, triangular shape. The large eyelets are circled by rings of garter stitch. It evokes the look of summer blossoms in the garden. It’s romantic and soft, making it perfect for summer strolls through botanical gardens or farmers’ markets.

Why I love it: It adds a feminine touch to any outfit without being overly frilly.

Another shawl inspired by the garden, the Herb Garden Shawl takes inspiration from thyme, rosemary, lavender, and sage. This one has a thinner lace border making it a slimmer, almost scarf-like, shawl. It’s light enough to wear as a scarf but also generous enough to wrap around your shoulders.

If you’re looking to learn a new knitting technique, check out the delicate bobbles in the lace border. It can be knit with or without the bobbles and bobble instructions are included. The yarn shown here is SweetGeorgia Cashluxe Fine in Basil.

Perfect for: Garden weddings, cottage outfits, or peaceful mornings with tea.

Sweet Summer Shawl

If summer had a flavour, it would be the Sweet Summer Shawl. This cheerful, easy-to-make shawl brings a burst of colour and joy. It’s great for beginners or anyone wanting a relaxing project. It’s playful without being overdone.

These photos show a purple shawlette done in SweetGeorgia CashLuxe Fine along with a green one done in Malabrigo Sock.

Color idea: Bright berry tones or faded watermelon hues would make this one shine.

Little Summer Shawl

Inspired by its predecessor, the Sweet Summer Shawl, the Little Summer Shawl is a compact, stylish layer for day-to-day wear. It’s also quick to make and light to carry—perfect for travel, errands, or brunch on the patio.

One skein of SweetGeorgia Yarns Tough Love Sock is used here and it is shown in Laurel on the left and also Oxblood on the right.

Styling note: Tie it around your neck bandana-style or drape over a sleeveless top.

Summer Lace Shawl

The Summer Lace Shawl is your go-to for elegance. With its open, delicate stitches and flowing shape, it adds just the right amount of grace to any outfit. Whether you’re dressing up or keeping it casual, this shawl delivers timeless sophistication.

The yarn shown here is no longer available but 460 yards of any sock yarn will do.

Occasion ready: Lightweight enough for warm days but glamorous enough for evenings out.

Each of these shawls is a reflection of what summer feels like—breezy, joyful, and full of natural beauty. These end-to-end patterns are beginner-friendly, easy to follow, make for portable projects, and create beautiful summer accessories.
