There’s nothing better than a great big squishy garter stitch shawl to wrap yourself up in on a cool day. The Halcyon Shawl is exactly that. It’s a large triangular ‘kite-shaped’ shawl that starts with just a few stitches and is worked sideways with a centred double decrease stitch. The centred double decrease creates a sideways ‘spine’ effect. The colour changes keep it interesting while the garter stitch knitting is simple and soothing. Choose any three colours of sock or fingering weight yarn to make it your own.

This pattern uses three colours and various combinations of garter stitch sections and stripes. The three colours can be complementary or contrasting. The choice is yours!

My original Halcyon Shawl uses three colours of Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply: Dark Aquarius (approx 400 yards), Coventry (approx 280 yards), and Fiddlehead (approx 400 yards).

I love kite-shaped shawls and so I knitted a second Halcyon Shawl in Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles in the more monochromatic Urchin, Graphite, and Construct colourways:
